So.....we all know The Queers album "Suck This" its a great "live album" recorded in a studio live! It has been one of my favorite memories of one of my favorite bands for quite a while(like twelve years, yo!) I just found a dude that recorded the whole thing to video live in studio while the Queers were recording! AMAZING! The vocals are low but if you've heard the record like 1200 times like me, you dont need the vocals!

# The world’s fastest breed of dog, the Greyhound has an astounding heart. A 65-pound greyhound’s heart is about the same size as that of a human athlete weighing twice as much, yet the running greyhound’s heart rate beats twice as fast as the running human’s: about 310 to 340 beats/minute vs. 170 to 210 for the human.

# The only animal that can accelerate faster than a greyhound over a short distance is a cheetah.

# One of the greatest challenges for canine athletes is the grueling 1,000-mile Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska. Scientists found that the average husky burned 11,000 calories a day - or about eight times the proportional calories a Tour de France cyclist burns. In addition, the dogs take in triple the oxygen of human athletes.

Tuli Kupferberg, one of the founding members of the Fugs and the self proclaimed "worlds oldest rock star" died on Monday and I needed to do a little homage to him. So here is a video that he and Jeffery Lewis did together that parodies Bob Dylan. Also if anyone knows where to get a copy of Tuli's book “1,001 Ways to Live Without Working” I am currently looking for it! Thanks for everything Tuli! He was 86 years old.

Its Finally here!! "Culture Generator Vol. 1" is my attempt to share great music with my community. I have compiled songs from anyone who has a connection to Frankfort, KY. Be it, they are from here, they have played here, or they are friends with me and I am from here :)

I set out to complete this a few months back but just a month or so got around to sending out the emails to friends. I sent out about 30 emails and got responses from almost everyone(and songs from about 15!) Pretty great odds!! So I am posting the .zip file here which includes all the songs, the artwork, info sheet, and instructions on how to put together your own copies(in the even that you dont get a physical copy from me!)

This was a lot of fun and I plan to do them about every 2 months so look out for the next one!!

Beatrice Warde (1900-69). American typographer, writer and scholar who spent much of her working life in England. Educated at Barnard College, Columbia, where she developed an interest in calligraphy and letterforms. From 1921-25 Beatrice worked as assistant librarian with the American Type Founders Company, pursuing her research into typefaces and the history of printing. In 1925, after marrying the type designer Frederic Warde, she moved to Europe, subsequently working for the Fleuron, then edited by Stanley Morison.

Her reputation was established by a 1926 article in the Fleuron, written under the pseudonym of 'Paul Beaujon', which traced types mistakenly attributed to Garamond back to Jean Jannon of Sedan. In 1927 she became editor of The Monotype Recorder, London.

Beatrice Warde was a believer in the power of the printed word to defend freedom, Warde wrote and designed the famous Monotype broadsheet This is a printing office (1932), using Eric Gill's Perpetua typeface. Rejected the avant-garde in typography as introspective, believing that classical typography proved a 'clearly polished window' through which ideas could be communicated. The Crystal Goblet: Sixteen Essays on Typography (1955) is an anthology of her writings.

Imagine that you have before you a flagon of wine. You may choose your own favorite vintage for this imaginary demonstration, so that it be a deep shimmering crimson in color. You have two goblets before you. One is of solid gold, wrought in the most exquisite patterns. The other is of crystal-clear glass, thin as a bubble, and as transparent. Pour and drink; and according to your choice of goblet, I shall know whether or not you are a connoisseur of wine.

For if you have no feelings about wine one way or the other, you will want the sensation of drinking the stuff out of a vessel that may have cost thousands of pounds; but if you are a member of that vanishing tribe, the amateurs of fine vintages, you will choose the crystal, because everything about it is calculated to reveal rather than to hide the beautiful thing which it was meant to contain.

Bear with me in this long-winded and fragrant metaphor; for you will find that almost all the virtues of the perfect wine-glass have a parallel in typography. There is the long, thin stem that obviates fingerprints on the bowl. Why? Because no cloud must come between your eyes and the fiery hearth of the liquid. Are not the margins on book pages similarly meant to obviate the necessity of fingering the type-pages? Again: The glass is colorless or at the most only faintly tinged in the bowl, because the connoisseur judges wine partly by its color and is impatient of anything that alters it.

There are a thousand mannerisms in typography that are as impudent and arbitrary as putting port in tumblers of red or green glass! When a goblet has a base that looks too small for security, it does not matter how cleverly it is weighted; you feel nervous lest it should tip over. There are ways of setting lines of type which may work well enough, and yet keep the reader subconsciously worried by the fear of "doubling" lines, reading three words as one, and so forth.

Printing demands a humility of mind, for the lack of which many of the fine arts are even now floundering in self-conscious and maudlin experiments. There is nothing simple or dull in achieving the transparent page. Vulgar ostentation is twice as easy as discipline. When you realise that ugly typography never effaces itself, you will be able to capture beauty as the wise men capture happiness by aiming at something else.

The "stunt typographer" learns the fickleness of rich men who hate to read. Not for them are long breaths held over serif and kern, they will not appreciate your splitting of hair-spaces. Nobody (save the other craftsmen) will appreciate half your skill. But you may spend endless years of happy experiment in devising that crystalline goblet which is worthy to hold the vintage of the human mind.

Yes I saw X in Lexington on Tuesday night and yes I am bragging! Go!

I had a blast of course! It was one of those nights that while you are there you know there is never going to be another one like this ever!!! Everytime I turned the corner there was a different amazing moment!
X was on the first punk compilation I ever bought. The first time I heard "Los Angeles" I thought the song was racist and then I GOT IT!!!! And from then on I have been the sarcastic ass that I still am today! So actually getting to hang out with them and drink beers with them and "hula hoop" with them!!! WOW!!!! I have no more words!

A few weeks ago I had been asked by a family member to DJ a girl's sweet sixteen party! The party was supposed to be in a hotel and be a classy event. I heard nothing for a month! Then the day before the party the family member contacted me and said "you got the p.a. and all the music???"

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? I assumed this shizzz had been cancelled and thought nothing of it! Since its family and thats what I do, I went ahead and ran around like a cluck and got everything in order. I got some annoying lights and stuff as a passive aggressive maneuver and got the music in order. I scrolled through their list of requested songs and thought they were ridiculously but threw some of em in anyway!

Long story short: The party got moved to a Ruirtan club in the country, kids were still dressed fancy, the party was lame, I drank a whole bottle of Ancient Age, and made this mix from the highlights. Oddly enough, its probably one of my tighter mixes! Even if it is pretty short and not full of like 20 tracks! I dont know! Beats me! Enjoy!

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks used to say, “Let’s play two.” But after what happened in the first game of a college doubleheader, both coaches agreed: “Let’s not.”

Eastern Kentucky played Kentucky State on April Fools’ Day, and the result was no joke: EKU led 49-1 when the teams stopped it after five innings, and they canceled the second game.

“I’ve never seen it in my 25 years of experience,” Kentucky State coach Lamar Johnson said. “It was inexplicable, to be honest with you.”

There appeared to be no hard feelings after Wednesday’s blowout. Johnson praised the winners for good sportsmanship, and put the blame on his overmatched team.

EKU began substituting during its 22-run first inning. Coach Jason Stein said the rout was unfortunate and would not accept a forfeit for the canceled second game.

“Our kids were very classy,” Stein said.

EKU’s official athletic Web site omitted the final score and game details in its recap.

According to the NCAA, it would have set the Division I record for the most-lopsided victory, but Kentucky State is in Division II. The biggest rout in Division II history was a 71-1 victory by St. Francis over Robert Morris in a game between Illinois schools on April 2, 1996.

Both games in the doubleheader were scheduled for seven innings.

After Kentucky State (2-16) got a run in the top of the first, EKU scored 22 times in the bottom half. EKU scored five times in the second inning and 19 more runs in the third, and finished with 38 hits including five home runs.

EKU had stolen 60 bases this season going into the game. After leadoff man Matt Davis drew a walk and stole two bases, Stein put up the stop sign, so as to avoid the perception of running up the score.

“The nature of baseball is you’ve got to just hit it. It’s just the nature of the game. All we could do was just play station to station,” Stein said.

Kentucky State made nine errors and Johnson said that was “generous” official scoring as there were likely several more. His team starts seven freshmen and nobody with more than a 20 percent scholarship.

Jayson Langfels went 7-for-8 with two homers and 11 RBIs for EKU (16-8).

Freshman Kendall Wilson started for Kentucky State and allowed 13 runs - albeit only four of them earned - while getting only one out. Reliever Jamaal Duncan didn’t fare much better, surrendering 25 runs - 14 of them earned - in 2 1-3 innings.

A day later, Johnson said his players felt badly that they did so poorly.

“The ones who actually have some heart or some kind of pride within themselves, they took it like a smack in their face. They were remorseful today,” he said.

Last summer me and my wife had the luxury to be able to take to Europe like a 1st grader with a sharpie! And one of the most fascinating lands we came across was Croatia! I would have never expected such a vast landscape and beautiful coastline from such an area that was war-torn so recently. And although, it has been 10+ years since their war I was stunned by how developed everything was and still how cheap everything was at the same time. You must go there before the hoards of American tourists figure it out(which will be soon!)

While in Dubrovnik, I caught the Croatia Records 25th Anniversary special on television. This was more or less a showcase of the labels new artists performing songs by the artists of the past. Some of them were terrible, really alot of them were terrible but then the band Azra popped up!

I was just about to say how I thought they sounded like a Croatia version of the Clash when a pic of the Clash appeared on the screen and I could only assume that they were talking about the influence that the Clash had on them!

Azra was formed in 1977 by its frontman Branimir "Johnny" Štulić. He was (and is) a kind of urban legend; he would show up in different places of the city, singing with his guitar - that is what made him famous before Azra even recorded an album. Other two members were Mišo Hrnjak (bass) and Boris Leiner (drums). They named the Band after a verse "Ja se zovem El Muhamed/Iz plemena starih Azra/Što za ljubav život gube/I umiru kada ljube!" (trans. "My name is El Muhamed/From the tribe of the old Azra/That lose their lives for love/And die when they kiss!") from a sevdalinka "Kraj tanahna šadrvana" ("Azra" here being a reference to a shortened versione of "Azera" or "Azeris", rather than a popular Bosnian name "Azra", as commonly thought). They are considered to be one of the most influential bands from the former Yugoslav New Wave rock era and the Yugoslav Rock scene in general.

They released their first single in 1979 with songs "Balkan" and "A šta da radim". The first album named "Azra" and published in 1980 achieved commercial success and popularized Azra in former Yugoslavia. Azra recorded its last studio album "Izmedju krajnosti" (Between the extremes) in 1987. In 1988 the band recorded 4LP live album under the name Zadovoljština (Satisfaction), after which Štulić disbanded the band. He is often at lengths with his past as he lives a secluded life and is often the target of reporters seeking an interview, which he is reluctant to give. Štulić recorded three more albums since moving to Houten, Netherlands, where he currently lives. A 2003 rock documentary, Sretno dijete (Lucky Child, the title of a Prljavo kazalište song) depicts Azra as the locus of the rock scene in the former Yugoslavia during the 1980s, along with the influential Bijelo dugme. Even until today, Azra has remained very popular among youth in the countries of former Yugoslavia, unlike many other new wave bands which are now considered, more or less, historical examples.(thanks wikipedia! couldnt have said it better myself)

The "S/T" record is by far my favorite although I will admit I havent gotten too far into their catalog! I would say any of the first 3 would be a good place to start then it up the "Ploče Singles 1979-1982"

I have had a sticker for this soundtrack on my guitar case for years and finally decided to see what all the fuss was about! WOAH!!! Here is what Wikipedia had to say:

One of the film's features is its score, composed and recorded by director John Carpenter. The combination of synthesizer hooks, electronic drones and drum machines set it apart from many other scores of the period and created a distinct style of minimalist electronic soundtrack for which Carpenter, and his films, would become associated. The score consists of two main themes: the main title theme, with its familiar synthesizer melody, and a slower more contemplative theme used in the film's more subdued scenes. Besides these two themes the soundtrack also features a series of ominous drones and primal drum patterns which often represented the anonymous gang gathering in the shadows.

The main theme was partially inspired by Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song.

Beyond its use in the film, the score is often cited as an influence on various electronic and hip hop artists with its main title theme being sampled by artists including Afrika Bambaataa, I-F, Dead Prez and Bomb the Bass, whose song "Megablast" featured a sample of the score and was used in the soundtrack to the video game Xenon 2 Megablast. Marc Damicis is an artist in the Philadelphia area. He does art in all mediums usually revolving around "monsters, creatures, skulls, freaks and weird stuff". He also makes his own books and zines.

I found him through flickr where he goes by the name PickledPunk and instantly fell in love with his monster buttons above! ANd if you too have already fallen in love with them go to his Monster Art Shop on etsy and buy them all!! Here are a few more examples of the buttons!

And although they are simply genius!!! Lets not reduce my man down to his Capitalist ventures. He does sculptures, paintings, drawings, etc... And they are equally as amazing! Have a look-see!!

FFFFound has been very good to me lately. For those of you that dont know, FFFFound is an invitation based image bookmarking service(and I'm still waiting for my invitation!! ahem!) But basically allows you to look at some of the most incredible images that people have found from all over the internet!

Followup with Louis Doulas

After my last post on Louis Doulas back in January he contacted me and we began talking. I learned alot about the 19 year old drawing/painting/printmaking student at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and one would say we have begun a friendship over the internet that has involved sharing art and artists that we enjoy, ideas, and even stories about the great "Windy City".

So, I felt the need to do a proper writeup and include some more art on him and asked him to send me a little about his artwork. He had some very insightful things to say and gives us a little peek into someone who I thin is quite a rising star in this gigantic world of artists. Here's what he had to say, as well as, some of his recent work:

My work usually never has a set plan to start off with. I really like the idea of letting the drawing grow organically by just building up certain shapes or having a color/shape dictate a particular mark or structure and vice versa.

With a constant ongoing self investigation of my work I'm coming to find that my recent body of work is about inventiveness or creating/building imagined systems and towns that belong to an ancient or futuristic time. I love the ambiguity of history and science and the documentation,symbols and pictures that come with it. I want to present my drawings/paintings as if they were the relics of some kind of past or future civilization; exposing the tools, inventions, structures, etc.
I believe that this process has always been the most natural way of working for me and probably the most fun.

My man Jake Isenhour is a friend of mine that I met while attending Western Kentucky University. Due to the lack of space in our painting studio me and Jake, as well as lots of others, shared a far too small amount of space. Which most people would complain about but this atmosphere was one of feeding more than bitching! All of the artists got to see every piece of their friends from start to finish! I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world! Below are some pieces he created while at WKU, mainly figures!

Jake now attends the University of Cincinnati for his masters program and I have only been able to keep up with him over these internettzz but the new work is as great and probably even better than before! I hope you agree!

When I was in New York last year I saw a whole bunch of these collages with the ads that were in the subway. My actual photos are right below this. I thought this was just the work of bored passengers as they waited for the train, but at the same time they were waaay too awesome to have been just randomly done.

It has now been revealed to me that this work was done by an art student who goes by the name Posterboy and that link send you to his flick account! What I had found was merely a smattering of the quality of work Posterboy usually creates!

New York Times says this: "While most other street or graffiti artists concentrate on adding their own imagery, illegally, to parts of the subway system, Poster Boy, a kind of anti-consumerist Zorro with a razor blade, a sense of humor and a talent for collage, has made his outlaw presence known all over the city by cutting and pasting the images that are already there in the form of ads."

Now it seems that Posterboy has been getting so much publicity, that he has been nabbed the the coppers. In a recent New York Times article they continued:

"But his stealth campaign, which has entertained thousands of normally glassy-eyed commuters and infuriated the police and the companies whose costly ads he has chopped up and scrambled, will probably get a lot harder now. At an art event in SoHo on Saturday, a group of plainclothes New York City police officers finally caught up to and unmasked, at least metaphorically, the man they say is Poster Boy.

“He is Henry Matyjewicz, a 27-year-old who lives in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and he was found after a tip from someone who saw the name Poster Boy on a flier for the event, the police said.”

“On Tuesday Poster Boy said that Mr. Matyjewicz’s arrest meant only good things for Poster Boy. ‘More awareness,’ he wrote in the e-mail interview. ‘More support. Outdoor advertising, a blight that can’t be ignored, will become illegal.’”

In 2001, I moved from Kentucky to Chicago. When I moved there I had the intentions of working as an intern for a record label, any record label that would have me. Only two got back to me in any adequate amount of time, Bloodshot Records and Hefty Records. Since I had never heard of the former I decided to pay Bloodshot a visit, after a few minutes discussing with random people that worked there what an intern does, one of them said I guess you could sweep the floor yada yada yada. I passed on Bloodshot and kinda put the idea out of my head for a while as I needed a job to pay the rent first.

In the winter of 2002, a man named John Hughes contacted me again and asked if I would be interested in being an intern for Hefty Records. I had completely forgotten about it. I said "Yes" immediately and one day wandered down to the Printers Row neighborhood among some warehouse type buildings. On the third floor was this amazing space with people that looked alot like myself wasting time in front of computers. I met John and talked to him about his fathers films for a second and then met a guy named Ray who was "in charge" of me and kinda told me what to do. These were amazingly nice people that sat around and listened to really good electronic music all day and got paid for it! Wow!

I interned there for quite a while doing numerous activities. One day I was stickering some albums and two guys walked in. John said
"Hey Brandon, come here" Then he said
"This is Josh Eustis and this is Charlie Cooper, you know from Telafon Tel Aviv"
"Uh....awesome! Hey guys!"
"Yea, these guys are amazing, youve heard of them right?"
"Oh yeah.."

I hadn't but soon I did and Hefty loaded me up with all of their records and I found out. "These guys are amazing!" Little clicky beats mixed in with ethereal swooshes and some of the most sophisticated electronic music I had ever heard. But at that time, to me they were just really nice guys. I had no idea how huge or whatever they were.

A few months later, Hefty threw a loft party with what I now know were some of the biggest names in electronic music Dabrye, Telafon Tel Aviv, T.Raumschmiere, Rick Stryker(from the 8bit Construction Kit) but again, to me, at this time these guys were just really nice guys!

I witnessed Telafon Tel Aviv's set which I could not fathom, Josh and Charlie were setup behind laptops but they had quite a few other musicians sitting around making ambient noise and beautiful stuff was coming out the speakers. Now I kinda have a grasp of what they were doing but at that time they were magicians to me and still to this day every record I hear of theirs is magic and beauty.

The world that I was introduced to by working at this little record label has affected me every day of my life since. The people I met and the things that I learned have made me a different person and I think a better person. Their world was completely foreign to me and everyone in it was making a difference, not just in Chicago but all over the world. I met countless people while working at Hefty that I run across in a random movie or musical project and say to myself "I'm pretty sure I met that guy/girl while I was sitting in the corner rolling Phil Ranelin posters.

Charles Cooper was no exception. I met him only a handful of times but I know what he has done and I know what his music does to people all over this planet.

On January 22, 2009 Charlie was found dead on the northside of Chicago, he had an argument with his girlfriend one night and had been missing for a week. I recently learned this while checking for updates on the Hefty website. I said to myself "This is no way to remember a life that affected mine even if we had only met a handful of times and even if we did not really know each other"

We are both musicians and therefore we are friends.

Below is Josh Eustis' letter to fans and a mix that I put together today of some of my favorite Telafon Tel Aviv tracks.

Charlie, its a minuscule token for the amazingness you have put into the world but please accept it from a kid in Kentucky that you and your art touched, even if it was unintentional.

Hello, Everyone.

It breaks my heart to inform you all that Charlie Cooper, my better half in Telefon Tel Aviv, passed away on January 22nd.

We have been friends since high school, and began making records together a decade ago. We have been so fortunate to tour the world together, while at the same time having a massive amount of laughs at one another's expense.

Aside from Charlie's singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. His musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world - his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved. In the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvelous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle.

He is survived by a sister, a neice, a nephew, his mother, his stepfather, me, and more adoring friends than the Universe has dark matter. As such, his family and I ask for your discretion and consideration of our privacy during these extremely turbulent waters.

I Got My Ticket!

This is not a lottery I am willing to take my chances with peoples! I have already got my ticket now!

The folks at The Institute for Human Continuity have arranged a lottery on their webpage to insure "every human a chance at survival"!! Because you know the world is totally ending in 2012

Their catch phrase of "How Would the Governments of the World Prepare 6 Billion People For the End of the World? They Wouldnt!" really strikes home.

I have often wondered myself if our pesky government would even tell us that we ave one day to live or if they would just take their money and bore into the center of the Earth with it! The second scenario seems a bit more likely to me!

Heloooooo! I did see that episode of the Simpsons where the world ends. And they kick Ned Flanders out of the bunker! And that is the sole reason I closed my left handed store! Eff you Southpaws!!

But doesnt this all seem a but too weird? I am going to admit when I clicked on the link for the IHC, I kinda thought it was a promo for a movie or something, and Im still not sure! But got my ticket and I am going to tell my wife to get hers, honey if youre reading this go ahead and get your self one of them tickets because Im gonna need ya after the world ends!
